What's the point of including Solar Power Battery Storage in your setup?

The first bit of advice

Maybe you are considering investing some of your hard earned cash into solar power battery storage because you have an existing solar system. Maybe you are looking to install a complete system consisting of solar panels and battery for storage. Whatever it is you are researching don't make any decisions under pressure from a deadline and a promise of the best deal that day!

Home battery systems are a cool addition to any setup and can look pretty if installed correctly!

A couple of options are available when you install a home battery system either as an AC or DC coupled solution. You have a basic hybrid setup which will provide the home or business owner the option to charge a battery with excess solar production and discharge either at night when there is no solar production or at peak hours when electricity prices are at a premium. The second option is similar to the hybrid in that the power can be stored and used for maximum self consumption at the property, but also includes some additional smarts that allow the battery to supply power and lighting in the event of a grid failure.

The hybrid type solar power battery storage system is a good start and could tick a box for system owners that would just like to store excess energy to use another time, but what happens when the power from then grid goes down? If you are looking to install a home battery system and you are reading this you might be thinking because you have residential solar batteries installed that you will have that functionality anyway, that's not the case!

Not all solar power battery storage systems are created or indeed installed with the end user in mind. In my opinion solar power battery storage installed without back up functionality might not be worth the effort or the price tag.

An Introduction to home battery systems

The benefits of going solar have now become obvious, if you are climate conscious its a great way to express your concern and actively make a difference. If you just want to reduce costs in the home it can also be a great investment if researched correctly and installed by a quality installer (Lilojo Electrical Solutions!).

Solar has just one downside unfortunately, despite what some people might think it won't work at night when the possums are out!

Luckily the human race has some pioneers in the ranks and we now have the ability to keep the lights on at night with a little help from solar power battery storage for the home.

Now this whole battery thing is almost as complicated as the whole solar thing!! For anyone that has gone through and researched solar you'll know what I'm talking about. Luckily at Lilojo Electrical Solutions we have the knowledge that can help iron out all of the complexities.

If you are in the market for a solar PV system for your home or business you'll probably want to invest in a solar power battery system at some point. With this in mind it’s pretty important to have a basic understanding of AC and DC coupled storage systems.

Solar panels produce DC energy from the sun, then we have an Inverter to convert the DC energy produced to AC for use at the premises. AC or DC coupling refers to the way that the solar panels are coupled or linked to the home’s electricity system.

DC coupled solar power battery storage solutions

The two types of home battery systems are AC and DC Coupled.

DC (Direct Current) - coupled PV systems are generally more energy-efficient because the DC power produced by the solar panels can be injected straight into to the battery and stored for use at another time. A DC coupled battery can be more efficient than AC coupled battery and here are some reasons why....

DC power from the solar panels is injected straight into the DC battery for use either at night or in peak billing periods. Because of the minimal conversions this can be considered as a fairly efficient system.

With DC coupled  home battery systems the benefit of oversizing is realized. Oversizing a system is when the amount of solar energy produced is greater than the system inverter base rating.

This means you can add more solar panels to your rooftop to generate more power, using the same inverter. Solar Inverters generally have a maximum DC power rating which can be utilized in this scenario.

When a PV system is oversized, the excess solar power that has not been consumed by the loads in your home can be re-directed to charge a  solar power battery storage system, supply an EV charger, a water heating system, and more.

With residential solar batteries installed as an AC-coupled system, the additional capacity could potentially be lost on a good day of production.

DC-coupled residential solar batteries can therefore increase your savings since they allow for more oversizing and more excess energy storage.

If you already have a solar system installed this could be the option for you.

What this means is that it doesn't matter what type of solar system you have installed, you can add one of many AC coupled residential solar batteries available with minimal complications.

AC coupled home battery systems are available from many manufacturers, with different capacities and different functionality.

The main advantage of AC-coupled solar power battery storage systems is their ease of installation when retrofitting storage to an existing solar system. An easier installation could present lower initial installation costs.

AC coupled solar power battery storage systems can be installed independently as a retrofit home battery system or as a complete AC solar power (solar panels with AC microinverters) with  residential solar batteries.

In an AC solar system the solar panels have individual micro inverters behind every solar panel on the roof. DC power is converted to AC power at a panel level and delivered directly to the AC loads at the property. With this type of system there is no DC voltage running through the property. The masters of this system Enphase Solar have an AC coupled battery in their product arsenal.

Lilojo Electrical Solutions are here to help you navigate the pro's and con's.

The main points to take into consideration when comparing AC coupled solar power battery storage and DC coupled solar power battery storage is that AC-coupled home battery systems are the obvious choice when retrofitting storage to an existing solar system but DC-coupled home battery systems tend to be slightly more efficient. All other arguments tend to come from a sales point of view!

Having been in the Industry for many years, at Lilojo we believe that the most important decision you make as the end user is the installer you choose. A good, reputable installer can help mitigate some of the issues that come from choosing a company that put the bottom line before customer satisfaction. Buyer beware of this scenario.
